Ο Διονύσιος Λαυράγκας υπήρξε ένας από τους διαμορφωτές της ελληνικής μουσικής ιστορίας, καθώς και σημαντικός εκπρόσωπος της Εθνικής Μουσικής Σχολής και ιδρυτής του "Ελληνικού Μελοδράματος". Προικισμένος με έμφυτο μουσικό ταλέντο που καλλιέργησε σπουδάζοντας στα διάσημα ωδεία της Νάπολης και του Παρισιού, αφιέρωσε τη ζωή του στην Όπερα μεταφράζοντας και διδάσκοντας έργα, εκπαιδεύοντας και αναδεικνύοντας νέους καλλιτέχνες, καταρτίζοντας θιάσους, διευθύνοντας δοκιμές και παραστάσεις. Ιδιαίτερα σημαντικός θεωρείται ο πολυετής αγώνας του για θεμελίωση του "Ελληνικού Μελοδράματος". Δικαιώθηκε με την ίδρυση της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής, δύο χρόνια πριν από το θάνατό του. Ήταν πολυγραφότατος, έγραψε συμφωνικά έργα, όπερες, όπως τη "Διδώ", τη "Φρόσω", οπερέτες, φωνητικά για χορωδία και ορχήστρα όπως το "Πένταθλον", την "Καθολική λειτουργία" κ.ά. Επίσης, έγραψε τραγούδια (μονωδίες, κλασικά, καντάδες), καθώς και τον "Ύμνο της Δημοκρατίας" του Αλέξανδρου Παπαναστασίου. Τιμήθηκε με το Εθνικό Αριστείο Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών και με τον Χρυσό Σταυρό Γεωργίου Α΄.
